The Kaduna State Government has ended an 11-year suspension on state-sponsored Christian pilgrimage, approving 50 Christian pilgrims to participate in the programme this year.
Governor Uba Sani announced the decision, describing it as part of efforts to promote fairness, inclusion, and religious harmony across the state.
The Christian pilgrimage scheme had been halted under previous administrations, notably during the tenure of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, when the state’s Christian Pilgrims Welfare structure was dissolved, effectively ending government sponsorship.
Christian leaders and community representatives in Kaduna welcomed the move, saying it restores confidence and demonstrates respect for religious diversity. Government officials also noted that the number of beneficiaries could be expanded gradually in future editions, depending on available resources.
The last state-supported Christian pilgrimage from Kaduna reportedly took place in 2014, with pilgrims travelling to holy sites in Israel.
