Kano, Nigeria – Troops from Nigeria’s 3rd Brigade successfully rescued eight out of ten people abducted during a wedding in Dabawa, Shanono Local Government Area, Kano State, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
According to military sources, the attackers, some wearing military-style camouflage, ambushed the wedding party before fleeing with the victims. Acting swiftly, soldiers engaged the kidnappers and pursued them into Katsina State along the Gidan Mutum Daya road axis, ultimately rescuing the majority of the victims. The remaining two individuals are still missing, and search efforts continue.
“The rescued victims have been reunited with their families. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of residents in Kano and neighboring states,” a military spokesperson said.
Rising Threat of Banditry
This rescue is part of an intensified campaign against armed banditry and terrorism across northern Nigeria, where kidnappings have surged in recent years. Coordinated military operations have reportedly neutralized armed criminals, rescued dozens of abductees, and disrupted criminal networks in the region.
Security agencies have emphasized intelligence-led, joint operations to track and apprehend criminal groups operating across state lines. Analysts say that while military interventions have saved many lives, the underlying security challenges—including poverty, unemployment, and porous borders—remain significant obstacles.
Local communities have expressed relief at the rescue, while calling on authorities to implement long-term strategies to prevent future attacks.
“The operation shows that coordinated efforts can yield results, but sustainable peace will require more than reactive measures,” said a community leader in Shanono.
As northern Nigeria continues to grapple with the dual threats of banditry and terrorist activity, military vigilance and community cooperation remain critical to safeguarding civilians.
