El-Rufai Vows to Hold Government Accountable After Alleged Airport Arrest Attempt

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has urged opposition leaders to remain vigilant and united in their efforts to remove the current administration ahead of the 2027 general elections, following an alleged attempt to detain him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Speaking during a meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai described the airport incident as “unfortunate, unnecessary, and politically motivated”, claiming that operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), attempted to detain him without prior formal notice.

El-Rufai said his legal team had already informed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of his plan to appear for questioning on February 16, 2026, after returning from overseas, and no communication had been received from the ICPC beforehand.

Addressing the opposition, he said:

> “We must work hard. We must not sleep between now and March 2027 until we remove this tyrant from office.”

He also accused the government of weaponizing security agencies for political purposes, warning that such acts undermine democratic institutions and erode public trust.

In response to the incident, Atiku Abubakar visited El-Rufai to show solidarity, describing the attempted arrest as unjustified. El-Rufai’s legal counsel emphasized that he will honour legitimate security invitations while pursuing legal action over the alleged unlawful attempt to detain him.
