Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Leaders of the African Union (AU) have strongly condemned what they described as the “extermination” of the Palestinian people amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, during the 39th AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
The leaders emphasized the need to uphold international law and humanitarian principles and called for the lifting of blockades preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza.
The summit also spotlighted conflicts across Africa, including in Sudan, the Sahel region, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Somalia, urging member states to “silence the guns” and resolve hostilities threatening civilian lives.
Other key discussions focused on climate change, governance challenges, and water and sanitation issues affecting communities across the continent.
During the summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the AU’s role in fostering multilateral diplomacy and reiterated calls for Africa to gain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
