Tinubu Calls for Unconditional Release of South Sudan’s Riek Machar, Backs Peace Efforts

President Bola Tinubu has called for the unconditional release of South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar, along with other detained opposition leaders, as part of efforts to support peace in the country.

The appeal was made in a statement during the AU High-Level Summit on South Sudan (C‑5 Plus Summit) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria.

Nigeria reaffirmed its support for the Revitalized Peace Agreement, urging all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue without conditions, work toward national reconciliation, and prepare for free and fair elections.

The summit, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, expressed concern over delays in implementing the peace agreement, which was signed eight years ago but remains fragile.

Other African leaders and regional organizations, including IGAD, stressed the need to renew reconciliation efforts and strengthen monitoring to prevent a resurgence of conflict in South Sudan.
