Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin sighting the new moon that marks the start of Ramadan on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to 29 Sha’aban 1447 A.H. in the Islamic calendar.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Sultan emphasized the importance of sighting the new moon to determine the beginning of the holy month of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide.
This directive follows traditional Islamic practice, where the appearance of the Ramadan crescent signals the end of Sha’aban and the commencement of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and engage in increased worship and charitable acts.
