The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement follows the confirmed sighting of the new crescent moon in various parts of Nigeria on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Sha’aban on the Islamic calendar.
Muslims across the country are urged to begin fasting from Fajr on Wednesday.
In Nigeria, the start of Ramadan is determined by the actual sighting of the lunar crescent, and the NSCIA under the Sultan’s leadership verifies sightings before making an official announcement.
