Over 1.5 Million Voters Ready as FCT Area Council Elections Loom

More than 1.5 million registered voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to cast their ballots in the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, 21 February 2026, following the official conclusion of political campaigns.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that out of 1,680,315 registered voters, 1,587,025 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), representing a 94.4% collection rate.

The elections will take place across the six FCT area councils: Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, and Kwali. A total of 68 seats are being contested — 6 chairmen and 62 councillors.

To facilitate voter participation, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, declared Friday, 20 February, a public holiday, with a restriction of movement from 8 pm (Friday) to 6 pm (Saturday).

INEC emphasized that only valid PVCs will be accepted for voting and warned against vote buying and other electoral offences. Preparations, including BVAS device deployment, logistics, and accreditation of observers and journalists, have been completed.

Political parties have urged residents to exercise their voting rights peacefully and lawfully, with some candidates in select councils having withdrawn and endorsed rivals ahead of the polls.
