The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the commencement of a ward-level National Identification Number (NIN) registration exercise across Nigeria, scheduled to begin on February 16.
The commission said the initiative is designed to decentralise NIN enrollment by taking registration services directly to communities, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. By operating at the ward level, the exercise aims to reduce barriers to access and ensure broader participation in the national identity system.
NIMC emphasised that the registration exercise will be free of charge, cautioning members of the public against paying money to unauthorised agents. The commission disclosed that the programme would be executed in partnership with state and local governments, alongside traditional rulers and community leaders, to guarantee effective mobilisation and transparency.
According to the agency, the ward-based enrollment is part of ongoing efforts to expand identity coverage and promote inclusive governance, in line with the broader development objectives of the Federal Government under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The commission advised Nigerians to obtain information on specific dates and registration locations in their wards through its official communication platforms, urging citizens to take advantage of the opportunity to register without cost.
NIMC expressed confidence that the nationwide exercise would boost NIN penetration and bridge existing gaps in identity registration, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure and public service delivery.
