National Assembly to Hold Emergency Session to Reschedule Presidential Election Due to Ramadan Fasting

The Nigerian National Assembly has convened an emergency session to consider the possibility of moving the Presidential Election date from February 20 to February 13.

Reports indicate that the emergency session involves both the Senate and the House of Representatives, where lawmakers will discuss issues related to the election timetable and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Sources say one of the main reasons for this move is to avoid congestion and logistical challenges in conducting the election during the Ramadan fast, which is expected to begin in early February 2027.

Additionally, the National Assembly is expected to grant the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the legal flexibility to adjust the election schedule in a manner that allows citizens to cast their votes conveniently.

Political analysts have commented that this initiative by the National Assembly could help ensure fairness and reduce potential challenges during the election period, especially for fasting citizens, security personnel, and election officials.
