Kano State authorities have confirmed a Lassa fever outbreak, reporting one death and two new infections.
The deceased was an MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) staff member from France, who fell ill about a week after arriving in Nigeria.
The two other cases include a medical doctor from Minjibir and a woman who had close contact with the first patient.
62 contacts across five local government areas have been identified, including 25 high-risk individuals, of whom 22 tested negative and 3 positive.
Response Measures:
Health authorities have activated contact tracing, isolation, and treatment protocols.
The woman is being treated at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, while the doctor is in an isolation facility.
Public health teams are conducting community awareness, sanitation campaigns, and rodent control measures to limit further spread.
About Lassa Fever:
The disease is primarily transmitted through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents and can spread person-to-person in healthcare settings without proper precautions. Early treatment with supportive care and antivirals like ribavirin improves recovery.
This outbreak coincides with the peak dry season, when Lassa fever cases traditionally rise in Nigeria.
