At least 32 people have been killed after armed gunmen riding motorcycles launched coordinated overnight attacks on several villages in the Borgu area of Niger State, north-central Nigeria.
Local sources said the attackers stormed the communities in the early hours of the morning, firing indiscriminately at residents and setting houses and other structures ablaze. Several villagers were also abducted, although the exact number of those taken away remains unclear.
Eyewitnesses described the attacks as swift and violent, saying the gunmen arrived in large numbers and overwhelmed the communities before fleeing into nearby forests.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives have been deployed to the affected areas to restore calm and track down the assailants. Authorities also said efforts are ongoing to rescue those abducted during the raids.
The latest violence highlights the worsening security situation in parts of north-central and north-western Nigeria, where armed banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on rural communities have become increasingly frequent.
Security agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by providing useful information that could aid ongoing operations aimed at restoring peace in the region.
