Former Super Eagles coach José Peseiro says England made a “mistake” by overlooking Ademola Lookman for senior call-ups, paving the way for Nigeria to secure the winger.
Lookman, who represented England at youth levels and won the U‑20 World Cup in 2017, was reportedly overlooked for senior England call-ups, a move Peseiro described as a “mistake.” Feeling frustrated by the lack of opportunities with England, Lookman opted to play for Nigeria, the country of his parents.
Peseiro, who took over as Nigeria coach in 2022, played a key role in integrating Lookman into the Super Eagles squad.
He trusted the player’s abilities despite his inconsistent club form, giving him a prominent role in the national team.
Since committing to Nigeria, Lookman has emerged as one of the Super Eagles’ standout performers, contributing in major tournaments and boosting his club career in Europe.
Peseiro believes the winger’s decision has proven beneficial for both the player and Nigerian football, while England missed the chance to secure his services at senior level.
