Iran Vows to Resist US Pressure on Nuclear Programme

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday said his country would not bow to “excessive demands” regarding its nuclear programme, following the resumption of talks between Tehran and the United States.

Pezeshkian stated that Iran was prepared to accept any form of verification of its nuclear activities, stressing that the country was not seeking to develop an atomic weapon.

Iran and the United States resumed negotiations last week for the first time since the conflict with Israel in June, during which the US carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

“Our Iran will not yield in the face of aggression, but we are continuing dialogue with all our strength with neighbouring countries in order to establish peace and tranquillity in the region,” Pezeshkian said.

He made the remarks at Azadi Square in Tehran during events marking the 47th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution. He added that Iran would not give in to what he described as unreasonable demands from foreign powers.

Iran has maintained that the talks should focus strictly on its nuclear programme, while the United States wants discussions to also cover Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for armed groups in the region.

Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, although Western countries and Israel accuse Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.

Thousands of supporters of Iran’s leadership gathered at Azadi Square to commemorate the anniversary of the 1979 revolution that overthrew the US-backed shah. An AFP correspondent reported a heavier security presence than in previous years.

Women wearing veils waved Iranian flags and held portraits of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The anniversary comes amid heightened tensions, following nationwide protests in Iran last month that were met with a major security crackdown, as the United States warned it could take military action in support of demonstrators.
