Arsenal Held at Brentford as Manchester City Close Title Gap

Arsenal’s lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League has been cut to four points after Mikel Arteta’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford.

The Gunners went ahead on the hour mark when Noni Madueke powered home a fine header, putting the visitors on course for a crucial victory in the title race. However, Brentford responded just 10 minutes later as Keane Lewis-Potter struck after Michael Kayode’s long throw caused problems in the Arsenal box.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Brentford — who knew a win would have lifted them above Liverpool in the table — finished the match strongly. Igor Thiago squandered a golden opportunity in stoppage time, while Arsenal were also denied a dramatic winner when substitute Gabriel Martinelli was kept out by goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher during a frantic finale.

The result keeps Arsenal top but reduces their cushion over Manchester City, who have regained momentum after nearly falling nine points behind just days ago at Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side are now firmly back within striking distance.

Arsenal, runners-up for the past three seasons, still face a decisive trip to the Etihad Stadium in April as they continue their bid to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League title.
